Can I use the South Beach Diet® if I have diabetes?
Yes. The South Beach Diet is appropriate for people who are overweight and have diabetes. People living with diabetes will need to modify their Phase 1 meal plan, due to the lower calorie consumption in Phase 1. Those with diabetes can call to learn more about how to modify their Phase 1 meal plan. We recommend that you consult your physician before starting any weight loss or exercise program, especially if you are taking diabetic medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, as your dosages most likely will need to be adjusted as early as your first day on the program. The South Beach Diet is not a cure, prevention or treatment for diabetes, and is not a substitute for diabetes medications. Losing weight helps you to lower your blood sugar so you can manage your type 2 diabetes.
