Can I drink alcohol on the South Beach Diet® Program?
The South Beach Diet® principles do allow alcohol during Phases 2 and 3 of the program. During active weight loss phase, it is recommended to limit consumption to 2 servings per week and pay attention to portion sizes. Choose only dry wines and avoid sweet wines and wine coolers, as they provide more sugar and carbohydrates. Limit beer to light beers to keep the carbohydrates lower. And, avoid serving liquor with high sugar mixers.
Examples of a single serving of alcohol:
- 4 ounces dry red or white wine
- 1 ½ ounces liquor (bourbon, gin, rum, sake, tequila, vodka)
- 12 ounces lite beer
